Bile acids (BAs) are a large family of steroid molecules with amphipathic nature, synthesized from cholesterol in the liver. They are important for the digestion, absorption, excretion, and transport of fatty acids and other sterols in the gastrointestinal tract and liver.

On the other hand, alongside many beneficial properties, BAs may also have potent toxic effects and there are numerous mechanisms to prevent their accumulation in tissues and blood.

Cholic acid 3-sulfate (disodium salt) is a sulfated bile acid. Such sulfated bile derivatives are formed in the metabolic pathway sulfation, catalyzed by the enzyme sulfotransferase-2A1, and are far less toxic than their unsulfated bile acid counterparts.
