Chenodeoxycholic acid 7-sulfate (disodium salt)

3α, 7α -dihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid 7-sulfate disodium salt

Chenodeoxycholic Acid 7-Sulfate is a metabolite of one of the primary bile acids (BAs) - chenodeoxycholic acid. It is also an extremely weak basic detergent.

The compound is produced in the process of conjugation of the sulfate group with a hydroxy group at position 7 of chenodeoxycholic acid in the liver hepatocytes and the intestines.

Chenodeoxycholic Acid 7-Sulfate belongs to the class of organic compounds monohydroxy BAs, alcohols, and derivatives. These are any derivates, bearing a hydroxyl group.

Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA/chenocholic acid), an epimer of ursodeoxycholic acid, is a primary BA, naturally occurring in the human body. It is synthesized in the hepatocytes as an end product of cholesterol catabolism via several enzyme-regulated steps. Chenocholic acid has multiple properties, the most significant of which is facilitating lipid digestion, transport, and elimination. CDCA prevents gallstones formation - it dissolves the cholesterol that creates them and inhibits liver production of cholesterol alongside its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Because of these anti-gallstone formation abilities, it has a wide application as a therapeutic agent for liver and bile duct diseases. Chenocholic acid has a positive impact on a range of other pathological conditions - xanthomatosis, constipation, bowel dysfunction, and more.

On the other hand, chenodeoxycholic acid can also decrease the number of other bile acids, so its high levels might lead to liver damage. It has been found that CDCA even causes serum aminotransferase elevated levels.

Moreover, chenocholic acid is the most potent natural BA that stimulates the nuclear BA receptor - farnesoid X receptor, which modulates the transcription of many genes.

CDCA derivative Chenodeoxycholic Acid 7-Sulfate is a perfect detergent to study and evaluate structure-activity interactions of CDCA modified analogs and their variability in functions and efficacy.
