Taurodehydrocholic Acid (TDHCA) or taurodehydrocholate is an organic amphipathic molecule.

It is a taurine conjugate of bile acid (BA) dehydrocholic acid. This BA, on the other hand, is a synthetic compound obtained through a process of oxidation of one of the primary human BAs, cholic acid, with chromic acid. Dehydrocholic acid is mainly used to stimulate biliary lipid secretion (cholagogue). The semisynthetic acid also finds application as a gastrointestinal drug, hydrocholeretic, diuretic, and diagnostic agent.

Taurodehydrocholic Acid has some features specific to BAs. It can regulate fats and sterols metabolism in the intestines and liver and acts on the homeostasis of cholesterol, other BAs, and glucose and energy homeostasis.

Considering that, many studies have been focused specifically on how exactly taurodehydrocholic acid affects cholesterol metabolism - what mechanisms, biochemical reactions, enzymes, and other molecules are involved in the process. It has been found that TDHCA administration leads to an increased ABCG5 gene expression. It encodes G5 transporters, expressed in the canalicular membrane of hepatocytes. High expression of ABCG5 is thought to be one mechanism through which Taurodehydrocholic Acid prompts biliary cholesterol secretion.
