For the month of May, our founder, Walter A. (Walt) Shaw, has a full schedule! Read on to learn where you can expect to find him and the Avanti team this month.

Federation of European Biochemical Societies

The FEBS Special Meeting takes place this year from May 6 to 10 in Cascais, Portugal. Walt will be attending the meeting with the Avanti crew to learn more about the theme of the event: Sphingolipid Biology, Sphingolipids in Physiology and Pathology.

The meeting this year will cover topics in sphingolipid biology. More specifically, the meeting will feature discussion on the role of sphingolipids in different human diseases, including cancer, metabolic syndrome, genetic disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Yeast Lipid Conference

Following one quick and crazy week back at the office in Birmingham, Alabama, Walt will be headed back out—to Ljubljana, Slovenia this time! He will be attending the 14th Yeast Lipid Conference from May 22 to 24.

This international conference is held biannually to promote the free exchange of information and open discussion between scientists who specialize in yeast or fungal lipids. This year’s conference will focus on the topics of metabolism of phospholipids and sterols, protein-membrane interactions, yeasts as a platform for lipid production, and more.

Biophysical Society Meeting

Directly after YLC 2019, Walt will be packing his bags in preparation for the Biophysical Society Meeting in Ontario, Canada from May 28 to 31. The event centers around professionalism and skills development training sessions while also providing opportunities for trainees to share their research accomplishments.
