MAGs and Lipid Cubic Phase

Lipid Cubic Phase (LCP), which forms spontaneously via self-assembly of many monoacylglycerol (MAG) species, has been found to improve the stablization and crystalization of integral membrane proteins - including G-protein receptors. The method has been shown to be quite versatile in that it has been used to solve X-ray crystallographic structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic proteins, proteins that are monomeric, homo- and hetero-multimeric, chromophore-containing and chromophore-free, and alpha-helical and beta-barrel proteins.

More recently, cubic phase has also been proposed to be an effective drug release matrix and to occur in biological systems where they play a role in fat digestions and membrane fusion.

Avanti currently offers eight modified MAGs to use in meso crystallization studies, encapsulation of hydrophilic compound in the water channels, encapsulation of hydrophobic compounds within the lipid bilayer, encapsulation of amphilic compounds within the lipid-water interfacial environments, and/or evaluation in biological processes.
